第三章 Chapter 3

(40 天Days)

1上主的話再次傳給約納說： 1The word of Yahweh came to Jonah a second time:
2「你起身往尼尼微大城去，向他們宣告我曉諭你的事。」 2"Go to Nineveh, the great city, and announce to them the message I give you."
3約納便依從上主的話，起身去了尼尼微。尼尼微在天主前是一座大城，需要三天的行程。 3In obedience to the word of Yahweh, Jonah went to Nineveh. It was a very large city, and it took three days just to cross it.

4約納開始進城，行了一天的路程，宣佈說：「還有四十天，尼尼微就要毀滅了。」 4So Jonah walked a single day's journey and began proclaiming, "Forty days more and Nineveh will be destroyed."

5尼尼微人便信仰了天主，立即宣佈禁食，從大到小，都身披苦衣。 5The people of the city believed God. They declared a fast, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth.
6當這消息傳到尼尼微王那裡，他便起來，離開自己的寶座，脫去長服，披上苦衣，坐在灰土中； 6Upon hearing the news, the king of Nineveh got up from his throne, took off his royal robe, put on sackcloth and sat down in ashes.
7然後命人以君王的諭令和其大臣的名義，在尼尼微宣佈說：「人、牲畜、牛羊，都不可吃什麼；不可牧放，也不可喝水。 7He issued a proclamation throughout Nineveh: "By the decree of the king and his nobles, no people or beasts, herd or flock, will taste anything; neither will they eat nor drink.
8人和牲畜，都應身披苦衣，人要懇切呼求天主，更要轉離自己的邪路，放棄手中的暴行。 8But let people and beasts be covered with sackcloth. Let everyone call aloud to God, turn from his evil ways and violence.
9誰知道天主也許會轉意憐憫，收回自己的烈怒，使我們不致滅亡。」 9Who knows? God may yet relent, turn from his fierce anger and spare us."

10天主看到他們所行的事，看到他們離開了自己的邪路，遂憐憫他們，不將已宣佈的災禍，降在他們身上。 10When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he had compassion and did not carry out the destruction he had threatened upon them.
