起源：

這原為聖衣會(加爾默羅會)的重要日子。該修會始自十二世紀在加爾默羅山(嘉謨山)隱修的修士。

厄里亞先知曾在此山保護以色列子民對生活的天主的信仰。他曾在此處居住，力斥假先知的虛偽(列上18:19-20)。聖經曾頌揚此山的美麗。在舊約，山是天主顯現的標記。

相傳於一二五一年七月十六日，該修會的會長西滿史托(Simon Stock)在神視中見到聖母給他聖衣，並被告知：凡穿著聖衣而去世者必會得救。

制定：

該修會被迫離開加爾默羅山遷往西方。為了遷移時的眾多困難得以解決，逐定立於七月十六日為修會的聖母紀念日，時為一三七六至一三八六年間。

一七二六年，教宗本篤十三世將此慶祝推廣到全教會。

現今的意義：

善終的聖寵並非只是來自穿著聖衣的事實，而在於按照聖衣會的理想生活：默想與服從天主聖言，並熱誠為他人服務。(《我們的慶節》，見證月刋社印行，337頁。)

Mount Carmel is a mountain in Israel blessed by God (Isaiah 35:2; Song of Solomon 7:6). It was a place for asceticism during the era of the prophets. The prophet Elijah was a long-time resident there and thus, the name "Elijah Mountain". On this mountain, he confronted the 450 prophets of Baal and proved their hypocrisy.

After the birth of Jesus, followers of these prophets migrated to various places in Europe and established Carmelite hermitages. They spread the Word in the same manner as before: by prayer, seclusion and labour. In 1251 AD, the superior general of the hermitage in England, friar Simon Stock, together with members of his community, were in fervent meditation. The Blessed Mother made a special appearance to friar Simon Stock and entrusted him with the brown scapular and the promise: "Those who die devotedly clothed with this scapular shall end well and shall be preserved from eternal fire. The Blessed Mother will speedily rescue them to heaven." After this, the order was known as the Order of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

MARY'S PROMISE TO THOSE WHO WEAR THE SCAPULAR

Our Lady gave St. Simon a scapular for the Carmelites with the following promise, saying : Receive, My beloved son, this habit of thy order: this shall be to thee and to all Carmelites a privilege, that whosoever dies clothed in this shall never suffer eternal fire .... It shall be a sign of salvation, a protection in danger, and a pledge of peace.

Another important aspect of wearing the Scapular is the Sabbatine Privilege. This concerns a promise made by Our Lady to Pope John XXII. In a papal letter he issued, he recounted a vision that he had had. He stated that the Blessed Virgin had said to him in this vision, concerning those who wear the Brown Scapular: "I, the Mother of Grace, shall descend on the Saturday after their death and whomsoever I shall find in Purgatory, I shall free, so that I may lead them to the holy mountain of life everlasting."

一二五一年，聖西滿遇上一些看來像是無法克服的困難，於是他便向他所熱愛的聖母祈求。同年七月十六日，聖母向聖西滿顯現。聖母願意加爾默羅聖衣成為她的特別寵愛和護佑的標記。聖母當時許諾說：

「你和所有加爾默羅成員都獲得這個特恩，即無論誰在臨終時虔誠地穿著聖衣，將不會墜入永火之中。在離世的時候佩帶聖衣者，將會得救。這聖衣將成為得救的標誌，危險中的護祐。它是和平的承諾和永恆的盟約。」

許多天主教的神學家和權威人士，例如是教宗本篤十五世，都解釋說，聖母的許諾是指凡是在聖母瑪利亞的大家庭內（加爾默羅修會或聖衣善會）去世的人，在臨終的時候，她都會賜與聖寵，使他們持守在恩寵的狀態中，或為自己的罪發最後的痛悔。

教宗若望二十二世

公元一三三二年，聖母顯現給教宗若望二十二世，給棕色聖衣加上了有名的「周六特恩」。聖母許給教宗，凡虔誠佩帶聖衣而去世的信友，聖母要因她慈心的激發，於亡者去世期間的第一個星期六，救他出煉獄，帶他進入永生永福的天鄉。
